It is estimated that 77% of Americans own a smartphone. As this technology has been rapidly adopted, users are often unaware of the massive amount of data that is generated from smartphone use. Often we don't know who it is collecting this data, or for what purpose. In my session, I will describe methods to protect users from giving away their personal information unknowingly. There are very simple settings that can be modified without sacrificing convenience. Additionally, I will demonstrate more drastic measures that can be taken. When users are empowered with the knowledge of how and when their data is collected, they can make informed decisions to protect their privacy.
